A stunning set of photos of the annular eclipse seen on the 21st of May, 2012 in the US and parts of Asia. An annular eclipse occurs when the moon is at it’s most distant from earth and only partially covers the sun producing a ring of light surrounding the moon.

Has Instagram made everyone’s photos look the same?

The photography sharing mobile app Instagram has been bought by Facebook for a billion dollars this week. This article examines whether the app, with over 30 million users and a billion uploaded images has changed the face of modern photography.

Recreating standard film methods first discovered in eastern Europe in the 90s, Instagram filters give a distinctly retro look to photos mimicking some of the processes photographers used to push photographic boundaries. These include lens flare, vignettes, light leaks and muted colours reminiscent of out of date film.

Whether it’s the clever image processing that can be achieved at the click of a button or the 30 million mobile-app connected customers that have elicited the 1 billion from Facebook is a matter of debate.

Tilt-shift photography is a method of fooling the eye to make real photos appear as though they are of miniaturised scenes. The effect can be achieved by using specialized lenses or digital manipulation and exploits the fact that objects very close to the eye have a very narrow field of focus – if you blur the top and bottom of a standard photo the effect becomes apparent.
